Torrejón wins the VIPS Cup
Basket Torrejón added its name to the Copa VIPS list with a 64-92 victory over a Laso Academy team that fell behind in the first quarter (8-27) but never let up and sought a comeback throughout the rest of the match. The Torrejón team displayed their greater experience and solidity at this stage of the preseason.
Earlier, in the duel for the bronze medal, Veritas Pozuelo defeated Estudio. The grand final between Laso Academy and Basket Torrejón held great promise.
Both teams had made a notable impression in the previous matches, especially the Torrejón team, which started the final with a 3-8 lead. Like Saturday against Estudio, Rubén Escanciano, Javier Sánchez, and Manuel Chércoles aimed directly for the hoop. A Chércoles three-pointer made it 5-12 midway through the first quarter, and when Marcos Hermosilla made it 5-15, Ángel Navas stopped the clock. His team, always daring, was overwhelmed by a more accomplished, more direct, and, above all, more accurate Basket Torrejón. The next basket, by Javier Sánchez, perfectly reflected Torrejón play, with quick combinations until they found the hoop. With two minutes left in the first quarter, the score was already 8-24... and climbing. The Torrejón hurricane was reflected in an 8-27 first quarter.
The gap widened even further as the second quarter began. Basket Torrejón barely gave Laso Academy any room to maneuver, and they were up against a wall. Jaume Capella and Ángel Gómez did find their way into the game, but every basket was a victory. Even so, the Ángel Navas-led team cut the deficit to 14-29, forcing Colo Zuttion to call a timeout. Laso Academy and their young players had already entered the game. Jorge de la Morena confirmed this by scoring the 20-34 lead, but the immediate response was a three-pointer from Escanciano. And then came five more points... By halftime, almost nothing had changed: 32-55.
Ángel Gómez narrowed the gap as soon as the second half began. Laso Academy refused to give up. Although Roberto Donaire cut short the first comeback attempt, Héctor Ruiz persisted from distance, and Ángel Gómez kept up the pressure... With the score at 41-58 midway through the third quarter, anything could still happen, especially for such an electric and unpredictable team. Basket Torrejón had to give it their all to maintain their lead (51-71 with 2:45) against a rival who refused to let up, taking the third quarter 25-17 to 57-72.
The Ángel Navas-led team tried to squeeze their chances in the final quarter. Jesús Vilasánchez got off to a flying start with two points, but Basket Torrejón once again showed that at this point in the preseason, they are already in top form and more solid. With five minutes left, the gap remained at 20 points (60-80), and the passage of time confirmed the deserved victory for Basket Torrejón, who, after what they saw in the Cup, enter the League as one of the strongest contenders.
